Pro Footballer, Kanu Nwankwo, Oil & Gas Mogul, Walter - Bella Naija

Nigerian leadership awareness non -profit organization, Business Leadership Awareness Group (BLAG) will honour 3 successful entrepreneurs who have been making valuable contributions to humanity with a colourful event.

Speaking on the forthcoming event, the executive director of the non for profit organization,?Ossy Otegba,?disclosed that BLAG is currently working on a year book that will promote these outstanding individuals ? pro footballer, Kanu Nwankwo, business executive/oil mogul, Walter Wagbatsoma and philanthropist, Sade Okoya, so that they can be encouraged to do more.

Here are the profiles of the outstanding individuals

Kanu Nwankwo
Popularly known as Papilo, Kanu Nwanwko comes from a humble background but he rose to fame with remarkable exploits in football and business. Today, he owns a chain of businesses with diverse interest in oil, property, hospitality and photography.

The Owerri, Imo State born businessman is regarded as one Nigerian with a heart of gold because of his immense contributions to the society. Through these his many works, it was no surprise that he was a made a UNICEF (?United Nations Children?s Fund)?ambassador for two consecutive years.

A few years ago, the pro footballer encountered a life threatening heart ailment. He was tenacious and miraculously he got healed after prayers from family, friends and fans all over the world as well as surgical operations in the USA. Ever since his successful surgery, ?Kanu returned actively to playing football and used his fame to help assist others also battling with the life threatening condition. He supported charity organizations including Heart of Gold Hospice and later on, launched the Kanu Nwankwo Heart Foundation ? this non-profit organization has raised millions of Naira for children with heart related ailments. Many have been treated both home and abroad and are living a healthier, better life.

Walter Wagbatsoma
He has made a name for himself as one of Nigeria?s most successful business men in the Energy Sector. Walter?Wagbatsoma?s selfless contributions to humanity also endeared him to many within and outside the federation. He is the co-founder of Ontaro Oil and Gas, a pan African oil and gas company that is notable for delivery on its promises.

His track record as a professional in the banking and energy sector speaks volumes. Humble and Cheerful, Walter hails from Delta State. He previously worked with Shell Petroleum Development Company Audit Department in the 1990s, he later moved to Zenith Bank, Eco Bank and FSB International and Trade Bank where he displayed his leadership and entrepreneurial skills to the satisfaction of his co-workers. Every one who knows Walter, we always testify that he is a goal getter and were certianly not surprised when he won the Leventis Group Account for Zenith Bank several years ago.

He later moved into the oil and gas sector after a stint at Trade Bank, where he helped establish the energy subsidiary. His wealth of experience and customer loyalty helped him get the front burner of the energy sector within a short period of time. He made an overwhelming success of his energy business but never forgot to invest back into the lives of the less privileged in the society. Fondly described as a man with a heart of gold, Walter has also used his influence to resolve conflicts in the Niger Delta.

Some of his philanthropic deeds include contributions towards eradicating malaria and HIV/AIDS in African countries. One of his establishments, Canaan Logistics also donates about 80% of its annual profit to charitable organizations working with children. Happily married to Otsaye with two lovely children, Walter Wagbatsoma is a graduate from the University of Lagos, where he studied Accounting for his First Degree and Business Administration in the same institution for his Masters Degree.

Sade Okoya
The wife of top Nigerian industrialist, Chief Akanni Rasak Okoya, Sade Okoya is known as one of the nation?s most glamorous women at social gatherings. Tall and elegant, the Sociology graduate from the University of Lagos, knows how to get everyone?s attention with her fab attires. However, Sade is not just a smart woman with a pretty face, she is one woman that has a heart of gold for the less privileged. In recent times, with the support from her husband who is the chairman of Eleganza Group & RAO Property, she has been giving scholarships to 40 less privileged students currently studying in various institutions of higher learning every year.

AP Interview: Ahmadinejad pushes new world order

NEW YORK (AP) ? Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tuesday that a new world order needs to emerge, away from years of what he called American bullying and domination.

Ahmadinejad spoke to The Associated Press in a wide-ranging interview on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly ? his last as president of Iran. He was to address the Assembly Wednesday morning.

He also discussed solutions for the Syrian civil war, dismissed the question of Iran's nuclear ambition and claimed that despite Western sanctions his country is better off than it was when he took office in 2005.

"God willing, a new order will come together and we'll do away with everything that distances us," Ahmadinejad said, speaking through a translator. "I do believe the system of empires has reached the end of the road. The world can no longer see an emperor commanding it."

"Now even elementary school kids throughout the world have understood that the United States government is following an international policy of bullying," he said.

President Barack Obama warned Iran earlier Tuesday that time is running out to resolve the dispute over its nuclear program. In a speech to the General Assembly, Obama said the United States could not tolerate an Iran with atomic weapons.

Ahmadinejad would not respond directly to the president's remarks, saying he did not want to influence the U.S. presidential election in November.

But he argued that the international outcry over Iran's nuclear enrichment program was just an excuse by the West to dominate his country. He claimed that the United States has never accepted Iran's choice of government after the 1979 Islamic revolution.

"Everyone is aware the nuclear issue is the imposition of the will of the United States," he said. "I see the nuclear issue as a non-issue. It has become a form of one-upmanship."

Ahmadinejad said he favored more dialogue, even though negotiations with world powers remain stalled after three rounds of high-level meetings since April.

He said some world leaders have suggested to him that Iran would be better off holding nuclear talks only with the United States.

"Of course I am not dismissing such talks," he said, asked if he were open to discussions with the winner of the American presidential election.

Israeli leaders, however, are still openly contemplating military action again Iranian nuclear facilities, dismissing diplomacy as a dead end. Israel and many in the West suspect that Iran is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, and cite its failure to cooperate fully with nuclear inspectors. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Ahmadinejad also proposed forming a new group of 10 or 11 countries to work to end the 18-month Syrian civil war. Representatives of the nations in the Middle East and elsewhere would meet in New York "very soon," he said.

Critics have accused Tehran of giving support to Syrian President Bashar Assad in carrying out massacres and other human rights violations in an attempt to crush the uprising against his rule. Activists say nearly 30,000 people have died.

He said the so-called contact group hopes to get the Syrian government and opposition to sit across from each other.

"I will do everything in my power to create stability, peace and understanding in Syria," Ahmadinejad said.

Earlier this month, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi announced the formation of a four-member contact group with Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. But Saudi Arabia so far has not participated.

He denied Iranian involvement in plotting attacks on Israelis abroad, despite arrests and accusations by police in various countries. He also vehemently disputed the U.S. claim that Iranian agents played a role in a foiled plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States last year.

Ahmadinejad will leave office next June after serving two four-year terms. He threw out numbers and statistics during the interview to show that Iran's economy and the lives of average Iranians have improved under his watch. Since his 2005 election, he claimed, Iran went from being the world's 22nd-largest economy to the 17th-largest; non-petroleum related exports increased sevenfold; and the basic production of goods has doubled. Median income increased by $4,000, he said.

"Today's conditions in Iran are completely different to where they were seven years ago in the economy, in technical achievement, in scientific know-how," Ahmadinejad said. "All of these achievements, though, have been reached under conditions in which we were brought under heavy sanctions."

Iran has called for the U.S. and its European allies to ease the sanctions that have hit its critical oil exports and left it blackballed from key international banking networks.

Ahmadinejad said he had no knowledge of the whereabouts of Robert Levinson, a private investigator and former FBI agent who vanished in Iran five years ago. He said he directed Iranian intelligence services two years ago to work with their counterparts in the U.S. to locate him.

"And if any help there is that I can bring to bear, I would be happy to do so," he said.

He also claimed never to have heard of Amir Hekmati, a former U.S. Marine who is imprisoned on espionage charges in Iran. Hekmati was arrested while visiting his grandmother in Iran in August 2011, and his family has been using Ahmadinejad's visit to New York to plead for his release.

Ret. military leaders slam junk food in schools - Army News | News ...

http://www.armytimes.com/news/2012/09/gannett-retired-military-leaders-want-junk-food-out-schools-092512/

By Nanci Hellmich - USA TODAY
Posted : Tuesday Sep 25, 2012 7:54:38 EDT

Several hundred retired military leaders are raising red flags about childhood obesity in the U.S. and its impact on finding qualified recruits, calling for junk food to be booted out of schools and healthier fare to be offered in vending machines and a la carte lines.

Mission: Readiness, a group of more than 300 retired generals and admirals, is releasing a new report today saying that the 40 percent of students who buy high-calorie, low-nutrient junk food from school vending machines and cafeteria a la carte lines consume an average of 130 calories a day from those types of foods (candy, chips, cookies, pastries). That?s roughly 5 percent to 10 percent of the calories kids and teens should eat in a day.

The analysis says that junk food adds up to 400 billion ?empty? calories in a year or the calories in almost 2 billion candy bars, which would weigh almost 90,000 tons, more than the weight of the aircraft carrier Midway (70,000 tons).

All those extra calories are contributing to childhood obesity, a problem that means many young people are too heavy to serve in the military, ultimately putting national security at risk, the report says.

Three-quarters of those ages 17 to 24, or about 26 million young people, cannot serve in the military, a quarter of them because they are overweight or obese, says retired Air Force lieutenant general Norman Seip, a spokesman for Mission: Readiness, which advocates policies that would help young Americans get ready to serve. Other reasons young people can?t join if they want to: They don?t have a high school diploma, have criminal records or suffer from other health problems.

The new report, called ?Still Too Fat to Fight,? is a follow-up to the group?s 2010 report, ?Too Fat to Fight.?

?We look at childhood obesity not only as a health crisis but a national security issue,? Seip says. ?When 25 percent of young people can?t join the military simply because they are overweight, that?s an issue that needs to be dealt with.?

Right now, all the armed services are meeting their recruiting goals because of the economy, Seip says, ?but we shouldn?t use the current economy as a recruiting strategy.

?At the end of the day, it?s not our aircrafts, our tanks, our ships or our information technology that keep our nation safe and sound, it?s the men and women who wear the uniform and so proudly serve,? he says.

About a third of children and teens are obese or overweight, putting kids at a greater risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other health problems. They are also more likely to be overweight or obese as adults. Obesity is still climbing among boys aged 12 to 19, government statistics show.

In fact, the male rates of being overweight or obese (73 percent) in the U.S. are already higher than those of any other major country, the report says. ?While there has been nearly doubling of obesity rates worldwide since 1980, no other major country?s military forces face the challenges of weight gain confronting America?s armed forces.?

For example, many accepted recruits are diverted to special training to address inadequate physical fitness before they can even begin basic training, and those costs add up, the report says.

The retired military group based its caloric intake estimates on a survey of junk food and sugar-sweetened beverages in schools conducted in 2005 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). That survey found that about 40 percent of elementary, middle and high school students ? 16 million school kids ? bought and consumed these foods and beverages on any given day.

For its report, Mission: Readiness focused on junk foods, which are called ?competitive foods,? and factored out sugar-sweetened sodas because major beverage companies have stopped marketing high-sugar sodas to schools since the survey was conducted.

The retired military group is urging the government to move quickly in releasing updated nutritional standards for competitive foods in schools as required by the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act. The law directed the USDA to set new nutrition standards for all food served in schools. The updated standards for school meals have been released and are being implemented, but the standards for competitive foods served in a la carte lines, vending machines and stores have not been released.

?We believe the country has taken a step in the right direction in serving healthy foods at schools meals, but we need to finish the job and make sure there are high nutrition standards for foods sold in vending machines and a la carte lines,? Seip says. ?We urge Congress to put the health of our children ahead of special interest groups and adopt the USDA?s updated competitive foods standards.?

Justin DeJong, a USDA spokesman, says, ?Secretary Tom Vilsack has asked for additional time to review the proposed standards for competitive foods to ensure that we do what is right for kids in a way that is workable to the school districts that will be charged with implementation.?

Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, says about a dozen states have ?reasonable standards? for what?s sold in vending machines in schools, but there is still a lot room for improvement in schools. ?We are on the road to making improvements in foods sold in vending machines in schools, but we?re not there yet,? she says.

The military has been concerned about school nutrition for years and was instrumental in persuading Congress to pass the original National School Lunch Program in 1946, Seip says.

If you are overweight as child, there?s a good chance you?ll be obese as a young adult, Seip says, ?and you?ll be chasing that problem all your life. Developing healthy eating and exercise habits as early as possible is critical.?

?This is a team effort. This is not a spectator sport,? Seip says. ?There?s a role for everyone to play ? whether it be parents, government, schools, the medical community, food and beverage industry ? to turn the childhood obesity epidemic around.?

Genndy Tartakovsky Wants a Samurai Jack Movie

Genndy Tartakovsky says the Samurai Jack movie is still alive

Longtime fans of cult cartoon guru Genndy Tartakovsky are pretty much unified in their anticipation for his?3D animated feature Hotel Transylvania, which opens in a couple weeks. However, their interest goes beyond loyalty ? since the success of Tartakovsky?s first theatrically-released directorial effort could eventually pave the way for a film adaptation of his popular Samurai Jack animated TV show.

Tartakovsky has provided an update on the Samurai Jack movie ? and although he has no significant progress to report, the Russian filmmaker insists the project very much has a heartbeat.

Samurai Jack, for the uninitiated, is an award-winning cartoon series about a feudal samurai (Jack, obviously) who must battle his nemesis ? the shape-shifting wizard Aku and his minions ? in a dystopian future. It?s an ingenious blend of Japanese storytelling, sci-fi elements, stylized Kung Fu action, and other genres that earned the show a strong cult following, but has made the proposition of a film adaptation difficult. As Tartakovsky told IGN:

?I?ve been trying so hard every year, and the one amazing thing about ['Samurai Jack'] is that I did [the show] in 2001, you know, and it still survived. There?s something about it that?s connected with people.?

J.J. Abrams was once onboard to produce a Samurai Jack movie, but his plans fell apart a few years ago; similarly, Tarsem Singh (Immortals) expressed his interest, but has since moved on to other projects. All the same, Tartakovsky?s passion ? coupled with his championing of ?unrealistic? animation, in an age where photo-realism is increasingly the norm ? makes him an ideal director for a Samurai Jack film (especially one that is traditionally-animated).

Tartakovsky confirmed that a 2D-animated Samurai Jack movie not only remains an option on the table, it?s also the one being discussed right now:

?[I] want it, it?s number 1 on my list, and now Bob Osher, the President (of Digital Production at Sony Picture Entertainment), is like ?Hey, let?s talk about Jack. Let?s see what we can do.? ?And I go, ?You?re going to do a 2D feature animated movie?? and he?s like, ?Yeah. Maybe. Let?s do some research and let?s see.?

tarsem singh wants to make a samurai jack movie

Tartakovsky?s next job will be to?direct a computer-animated Popeye movie for Sony, but he insists a feature-length treatment of Samurai Jack remains??on the top of my list, and I?m trying as hard as I can.?

Hotel Transylvania, as mentioned before, will prove crucial to Tartakovsky?s plans for Samurai Jack. The critical success of said 3D feature would provide sufficient ?proof? that Tartakovsky can maintain his unique voice while working within the studio system ? without?compromising his storytelling (see also: Jos? Padilha?s struggle to realize his vision of RoboCop).

Moreover, if Transylvania is a sufficient box office hit, that will give the filmmaker more leverage to make the Samurai Jack movie that he and fans alike want to see ? that is, one that maintains the mixture of intelligence, artistic substance, and flashy style that set the original television series apart from so many other action-packed cartoons. Count us among those keeping our fingers crossed for that.

More on Samurai Jack as the story develops.

Babylonians identified Aries as the agrarian worker, the last stop on the ecliptic. The name of the constellation later changed to Ram, but why Babylonians changed it is uncertain. In the 7th century BC, Neo-Babylonians did a revision of the Babylonian zodiac that placed Alpha Arietis, Hamal, very close to the vernal equinox, which is how Aries came to be so prominent among the zodiac signs in astrology. In those times, Aries contained the equinox, the point at which the Sun crosses the celestial equator from north to south. Because of precession (slow wobble of Earth?s axis), the vernal equinox is no longer in Aries, but in Pisces. In 130 BC, however, it was located just south of Gamma Arietis (Mesartim) and was taken to be the starting point of the zodiac.

In Greek myth, Aries is identified with the golden ram that rescued Phrixus and took him to Colchis, where he sacrificed the ram to the gods. The ram?s skin, which he placed in a temple, was the Golden Fleece, which later appears in the story of Jason and the Argonauts.

Phrixus was the son of a Boeotian king. He had a twin sister, Helle. The children had a stepmother, Ino, who hated them and wanted to get rid of them. She came up with a plan to put the land of the brink of famine by making sure the wheat crops failed. When a man was sent to consult the Oracle at Delphi, Ino bribed him to lie and say the Oracle asked for the king?s children to be sacrificed if they did not want the people to starve.

Phrixus and Helle were about to die when a winged ram with golden wool came to their rescue. The ram was sent by their real mother, the cloud nymph Nephele. It took both children and flew east to Colchis. Only Phrixus survived the journey. Helle fell off the ram and drowned in the Dardanelles. The strait was later renamed to Hellespont, or sea of Helle, in her memory.

Phrixus was welcomed by King Ae?tes of Colchis, to whom he presented the Golden Fleece. In return, the king gave Phrixus his daughter Chalciope?s hand.

Bush administration received many pre-9/11 warnings

Author Kurt Eichenwald talks about what the White House knew leading up to the attacks and how they used the intelligence information in the months after.

By Robert WindremNBC News

On the 11th anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil, there is mounting evidence that the Bush administration received more intelligence warnings than previously known prior to the Sept. 11 attacks that killed nearly 3,000.

Kurt Eichenwald, a former New York Times reporter, wrote in an op-ed piece in Tuesday?s newspaper about a number of previously unknown warnings relayed to the White House by U.S. intelligence in the weeks and months prior to the attacks.? Eichenwald wrote of? the warnings in his new book, ?500 Days: Secrets and Lies in the Terror Wars.?

And former US intelligence officials say there were even more warnings, pointing to a little noticed section of George Tenet?s memoir, ?At the Center of the Storm.?

In it, Tenet describes a July 10, 2001, meeting at the White House in the office of Condoleezza Rice, then President George W. Bush?s national security adviser. The meeting was not discussed in the 9-11 Commission?s final report on the attacks, although Tenet wrote that he provided information on it to the commission.

What?s critical to understanding the difference between this meeting and others, says one former senior U.S. intelligence official who spoke with NBC News on condition of anonymity, is that the intelligence provided that day was fresh, some of it having been collected the previous day. And other intelligence and national security officials, also speaking on condition of anonymity, say the briefings make clear that, while Bush administration officials understood the nature of the threat, they didn?t understand its magnitude and urgency.

?This intelligence delivered on July 10 was specific and was generated within 24 hours of the meeting,? said the first official, who pointed out the text in the Tenet memoir.

Tenet wrote about how after being briefed by his counterterrorism team on July 10 -- two months prior to the attacks -- ?I picked up the big white secure phone on the left side of my desk -- the one with a direct line to Condi Rice -- and told her that I needed to see her immediately to provide an update on the al-Qaida threat.?

Tenet said he could not recall another time in his seven years as director of the CIA that he sought such an urgent meeting at the White House. Rice agreed to the meeting immediately, and 15 minutes later, he was in Rice?s office.

An analyst handed out the briefing packages Tenet had just seen and began to speak.? ?His opening line got everyone?s attention,? Tenet wrote, ?in part because it left no room for misunderstanding: ?There will be a significant terrorist attack in the coming weeks or months!'?

The team laid out in a series of slides its concerns, based on intelligence that included information ?from the past 24 hours.??

Citing his notes on the briefing, Tenet wrote, ?A chart displayed seven specific? pieces of intelligence gathered over the past twenty-four hours, all of them predicting an imminent attack. Among the items: Islamic extremists were traveling to Afghanistan in greater numbers, and there had been significant departures of extremist families from Yemen. Other signs pointed to new threats against U.S. interests in Lebanon, Morocco, and Mauritania.?

A second chart followed, listing a summation of the most chilling comments by al-Qaida. According to Tenet, they were:

? A mid-June statement from Osama bin Laden to trainees that there will be an attack in the near future.

? Information that talked about moving toward decisive acts.

? Late June information that cited a ?big event? that was forthcoming.

? ?Two separate bits of information collected only a few days before our meeting in which people were predicting a stunning turn of events in the weeks ahead.?

Another slide detailed how Chechen Islamic terrorist leader Ibn Kattab had? promised some ?very big news? to his troops.

There were more details, as laid out by one of Tenet?s top analysts, known in the book as ?Rich B.?? Tenet recounts his aide telling Rice and others, ?The attack will be ?spectacular.? and designed to inflict mass casualties against U.S. facilities and interests. ?Attack preparations have been made,? he said. ?Multiple and simultaneous attacks are possible, and they will occur with little or no warning. Al-Qaida is waiting us out and looking for vulnerability.?

Rice, Tenet wrote, reacted positively to the briefing and asked her counter terrorism adviser, Richard Clarke, if he agreed with the assessment. Clarke said he did, and Tenet said he and his aides left the meeting feeling that Rice understood the threat.? However, he wrote, the White House never followed up on the presidential finding that Tenet had been asking for since March, authorizing broader covert action against al-Qaida. ?That finding was signed by President Bush on Sept. 17, six days after the attacks.

Roger Cressey, who was Clarke?s deputy and is now an NBC News counter terrorism analyst, says one thing that is missing from Tenet?s description of the events is?that the intelligence pointed to overseas attacks. although CIA did tell officials that they couldn?t discount an attack on the US homeland.

??Everything we had (from US intelligence) pointed overseas, specifically to the Gulf,? he said. ?There was no actionable intelligence that pointed to the homeland. What we did know, and what we told domestic agencies, was there was "a disturbance in the force? and we were very worried about an attack.

Still, Cressey remains critical of the lack of a response going back to the first week of the administration, saying the counterterrorism team at the National Security Council and experts elsewhere in the government were ?butting our? heads against the wall? in an effort to get a meaningful response from the White House.

Would action by the White House have helped? Like Eichenwald, Cressey says he isn?t sure, but notes that when similar intelligence pointed to attacks on Jan. 1, 2000, ?Sandy Berger (Rice?s predecessor) and (President Bill) Clinton went to battle stations.?? Did warnings prior to the millennium help thwart a number of attacks back then??Cressey believes they did.

One intelligence official also noted that after the interception of the July intelligence, there was little conversation on the al-Qaida communications network prior to Sept. 11. It wasn?t until much later U.S. intelligence understood why: With the plans and operational personnel in place, the plotters were simply waiting for an opportune time to strike.

?They laid low because they were waiting for Congress to come back in session,? the official said.

The reason, he said: United Flight 93 was headed for the U.S. Capitol, where Congress was in session, when passengers overpowered the hijackers, causing the plane to crash in a field near Shanksville, Pa.??

The new simulation is a project led by physicists Salman Habib and Katrin Heitmann of Illinois' Argonne National Laboratory, and will run on the lab's Mira supercomputer, the third-fastest computer in the world, starting in the next month or two. The program will use hundreds of millions of "particles" ? elements in the simulation that stand in for small bits of matter. The computer will let time run, and watch as the particles move through space in response to the forces acting on them.

As the simulation progresses, these bits of matter will clump together under gravity to form larger and larger blobs representing galaxies, galaxy clusters and superclusters. To evolve the universe from the Big Bang 13.7 billion years forward to today, the simulation will take up to two weeks. [Video: Simulation of the Universe from Big Bang to Now]

    Testing the theory

The ultimate goal is to compare the best telescope observations of structure in the universe to the structure displayed in the computer model, to test the reigning theory of cosmology.

"We are trying to look for subtle ways in which it's wrong," Habib told SPACE.com. "That?s why you need these very high-resolution, very large-scale simulations to see if the observations don't match the predictions."

Dark energy is the name given to whatever is causing the?expansion of the universe?to accelerate. When this acceleration was first discovered in the 1990s, it shocked the science community, because theories predicted the universe's expansion would be steady or slowing down, because of the inward pull of gravity.

The current reigning theory posits that dark energy is what's called?the cosmological constant, a term Einstein first thought to put into his equations of general relativity to represent the vacuum energy of the universe. Although Einstein ultimately decided not to include the term, scientists later realized that it could explain the current observations of the expansion of the universe.

However, cosmologists aren't satisfied with this explanation, Habib said.

    Another possibility

"It's just a single number entered as an extra term in the equations," he said. "The problem is that if you ask what its value should be, it's enormous ? many orders of magnitude bigger than what is actually observed."

While simulations based on the cosmological constant so far appear to match what's seen in large-scale observations of the universe, scientists think that next-generation observations may reveal discrepant details.

If a cosmological constant is not to blame for the accelerated expansion of the universe, another possibility is that space contains some other type of mass or energy, such as a field, that is pulling everything apart.

"It's basically guesswork; it could be like this, or it could be like that," Habib said. "Either way it's very interesting."
